SCOTTSDALE, AZ – The 47th Annual PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will host the University of Washington and Penn State University in a college football matchup of elite teams on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcast live on ESPN. Tickets are available, starting at $95, by visiting FiestaBowl.org.
This will be only the third time the teams have played and the first since 1983. The Nittany Lions won both meetings, including a 13-10 Penn State win in the Aloha Bowl. The first meeting was in 1921 with a 21-7 Nittany Lions victory.
The Nittany Lions are a perfect 6-0 record in Fiesta Bowl games, the most recent a 38-15 win over Texas in 1997. Penn State defeated Miami 14-10 for the 1987 national championship at the Fiesta Bowl in one of college football’s greatest games ever and played in the game three times in a five-year stretch from 1977-82. This is Washington’s first-ever appearance in the Fiesta Bowl.
“One exciting aspect is having teams come to the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl who either have never been here or haven’t been here in a long time and we have that with Washington, and we’re going to our beginnings with Penn State,” said Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director. “The Fiesta Bowl has a great tradition of putting on a world-class college football bowl game and we are looking forward to continuing when the Nittany Lions and Huskies come to town.”
Penn State (10-2, 7-2) closed out a great regular on a four-game win streak behind the dynamic offensive duo of quarterback Trace McSorley and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year running back Saquon Barkley to place second in the Big Ten East. After going 7-0 to start the season, the Nittany Lions fell to both Ohio State and Michigan State by a combined four points.
On January 11, 2014, James Franklin was named the 16th head football coach in Penn State football history. Franklin has brought the Nittany Lions back into national contention, winning the Big Ten Conference in 2016 and 21-5 over the last two seasons.
This is the third straight season a Big Ten team will play in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl and the 11th Big Ten appearance overall – the most of any conference.
After finishing the season with a 41-14 win over rival No. 18 Washington State, Washington (10-2, 7-2) enters the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl for the first time in program history. Washington is in the New Year’s Six for the second straight year and is the first Pac-12 team to play in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl since Arizona in 2014.
Huskies Head Coach Chris Petersen has coached in one of the Fiesta Bowl’s greatest games, guiding Boise State to a 43-42 overtime win in 2007 over Oklahoma. He is 37-16 in his four years in Seattle, including a 2014 appearance in the Cactus Bowl against Oklahoma State.
The PlayStation Fiesta Bowl has served over three million college football fans, hosted 12 Heisman Trophy winners, seven national championships, one College Football Playoff Semifinal and has become an integral part of college football’s postseason. Some of the bowl’s most memorable games include the 1987 national championship matchup between Miami and Penn State; the Ohio State double-overtime thriller against Miami in 2003 to win the national title; and Boise State pulling off a series of trick plays to upset Oklahoma in 2007.
“It is a great honor to host two of the most prolific college football teams whose fans are among the nation’s most passionate,” said Steve Leach, Chairman of the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors. “We look forward to having them out to the Phoenix area and treating them with the Fiesta Bowl hospitality that we are known for.”
Prior to the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl game, fans are invited to start the day by attending the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade in Central Phoenix. There are also two on-site pregame options at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl starting at 9:30 a.m. – the Fan Fest Pregame Party is free with a PlayStation Fiesta Bowl game ticket or the ticketed APS Stadium Club Pregame Party.
The APS Stadium Club Pregame Party at University of Phoenix Stadium is $100 and will elevate any tailgating experience and feature big-screen televisions, live entertainment and an all-you-can-eat buffet right up until kickoff time.
All tickets purchased for the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl support Fiesta Bowl Charities, which has given $10 million to the Arizona community in the last seven years in charitable giving, including $2.5 million for the 2017-18 season, the most of any college football bowl organization.
