Fiesta Bowl Welcomes Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona As Presenting Partner of Volunteer Program and Community Resource Rooms

Mar 13, 2019

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – The Fiesta Bowl organization announced today that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ), will be its 2019 presenting partner for the Fiesta Bowl’s extensive year-round volunteer program. The two organizations also will design and launch a second Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room at a local nonprofit.

The joint collaboration is an expansion of BCBSAZ’s participation in the Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2019. During the game, fans were introduced to Mobilize AZ — BCBSAZ’s program to help solve Arizona’s most critical health issues: substance use disorder, diabetes, and mental health.

“The Fiesta Bowl volunteer program is the heart of our organization, laying the foundation for what we are able to do on a year-round basis,” said Steve Leach, Chairman of the Board of the Fiesta Bowl organization. “Having BCBSAZ as our presenting partner expands our volunteer program. We look forward to the energy and enthusiasm BCBSAZ employees will bring as they get involved with all things Fiesta Bowl.”

The Fiesta Bowl volunteer program has a base of over 3,000 people from across the state who come together to work and support all Fiesta Bowl events, charitable activities and the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, Cheez-It Bowl and Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade, presented by Cheez-It. During the 2018-19 season, Fiesta Bowl volunteers contributed 34,000 hours to the Arizona community.

Throughout 2019-2020, over 4,500 volunteers — BCBSAZ employees and Fiesta Bowl volunteers combined — will spend countless hours to serve the community. The top three BCBSAZ employee volunteers throughout the year will be recognized on field at the 2019 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

“We are excited to work with the Fiesta Bowl, engaging our 1,700 employees in additional community service opportunities, helping to inspire health across the state,” said Beth Ginzinger, Chief Strategy Officer. “This collaboration is a natural fit with our Mobilize AZ public health movement and volunteer program where we are tackling the health challenges hitting Arizonans the hardest, helping to reduce the impact of opioid misuse and substance use disorder, mental health, and diabetes in our Arizona communities.”

In addition, BCBSAZ will be the presenting partner of the Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room to amplify community resources. The new Community Resource Room will be housed at an Arizona nonprofit whose work relates to the Mobilize AZ health initiatives. This will be the second Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room, the first opened in December 2017 at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Phoenix.

“BCBSAZ shares our belief that dedicated volunteers working together increase our community impact, which is ultimately our goal at the Fiesta Bowl,” said Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director. “Our Community Resource Rooms provide a safe space for our youth, providing resources they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. BCBSAZ’s additional support will allow us to deepen our impact across Arizona through youth, sports and education.”
