Volunteers from UnitedHealthcare, Playworks and Fiesta Bowl Charities helped with record-setting event.
Today, the Fiesta Bowl Charities, Playworks, employee-volunteers from UnitedHealthcare, and third through eighth-grade students from the Avondale Elementary School District set the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the longest high-five chain. The event took place on the Fiesta Bowl field at Avondale Middle School in Avondale.
The previous record was set on Dec. 4, 2015, by 2,711 participants at Sacred Hearts High School in Taiwan. Today 3,473 children from Avondale broke that record and now hold the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the longest high-five chain.
“It took a team to break this record, so we are thankful to the schools, Playworks of Arizona, Avondale Elementary School District and UnitedHealthcare for coming together to make it happen,” said Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director.
In addition to partnering on the record attempt, Fiesta Bowl Charities and UnitedHealthcare together awarded Playworks of Arizona a $100,000 grant that helped them expand their work to 50 schools, serving close to 35,000 students this year. Fiesta Bowl Charities will also donate the 2016 Cactus Bowl playing field to a school in the Valley. Included in the donation, made possible by UnitedHealthcare, is the installation of the field, a scoreboard and more.
“What better way to inspire young kids and remind them that anything is possible than to shatter a world record,” said Joe Gaudio, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Arizona. “UnitedHealthcare and the Fiesta Bowl feel that they best way to break a record is in the spirit of Playworks, which uses the high-five as a teambuilding exercise for kids during recess and in the classroom. “
“We are thrilled to work with UnitedHealthcare to break another GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title and make an impact on the lives of thousands of children in Arizona,” said Chuck Warshaver, executive director, Playworks, a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve children’s health and well-being by creating a safe and productive environment in schools through physical activity and safe, meaningful play.
